EDITORS

Zack Barangan graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from New York University in May of 2007. Prior to working for ByStudents, he was involved in the development and launch of Asylum.com, AOL’s men’s entertainment channel.

Max D. Baumgarten graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a degree in History magna cum laude. Before he landed by at ByStudents, Mr. Baumgarten wrote a book on the American Civil War, worked as a historical consultant/researcher for The History Channel, and spent time free-lancing for various publications.

Ester Bloom graduated from Swarthmore College in 2004 with an Honors degree in American History and Film. She moved to NYC to work in the entertainment industry, left to write a book about the entertainment industry, and then settled down as an editor.

Michael Dang received a B.A. from UC-Irvine in 2005 with a double major in English and Film & Media Studies. After graduation, he worked as a political reporter for the Talk Radio News Service in Washington D.C. and received an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University in 2007.

Jessica Dye graduated from Princeton University in 2005 with a degree in English and a deep understanding of Ivy League after-hours activities. After a series of editorial internships, she moved to Chicago to pursue her master’s degree in new media journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill school, in addition to her love of tall buildings and loud music. Following a brief stopover on the family farm, she now resides across the river in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Ari Finkelstein graduated from Stanford University in 2006 with a BA in English. He has written for Black Ink Review, a literary magazine at Stanford, and The Buenos Aires Herald, a newspaper in Argentina.

Jon Golbe graduated from Wesleyan University in 2006 with a degree in film studies. He’s spent the ensuing years flitting around aimlessly through various jobs and internships at Vice Magazine, Upright Citizens Brigade, Kaplan Test Prep, HBO, and the producers of I am Legend, Y Tu Mama Tambien, and The Squid and the Whale, respectively. He spends his spare time making movies for Channel101 New York with his pal Jess Lane and performing in improv shows with the groups Beaver Las Vegas, Jurassic Park, and !Emergencia!

Jessica Gross graduated from Princeton University in 2007 with a BA in anthropology and a certificate in women and gender studies. At Princeton, she edited a literary magazine, wrote news and feature pieces for the daily newspaper, and coordinated community service efforts for a women’s organization.

Chris Haigy graduated from Pratt Institute in 2007 with a BFA in writing. He has been writing and designing for the web for two years and previously acted as research assistant to Joshua Furst.

Lucas Kavner graduated magna cum laude from Middlebury College in 2006 with a double major in English and Theatre. In addition to his work for ByStudents, he’s a published writer of both fiction and non-fiction and an active participant in the comedy and theatre circuits in New York City.

Julia Kaganskiy graduated from Emerson College in December 2007 with a degree in Writing, Literature and Publishing with a concentration in Magazine Journalism. Previously, she was an editor for Wonka Vision magazine and MAP Boston, as well as an American Society of Magazine Editors intern for Smithsonian Magazine.

Nikki Martinez received a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007 with a degree in English. At UCSB, Nikki was a Writing Tutor for CLAS, an intern at the District Attorney’s office, and a member of Alpha Phi.

Dan Mesure graduated from the University of Delaware in 2007 with a BS in English and a concentration in journalism. He worked for UD’s independent student newspaper, The Review, for three years. While at the paper, he started as a sports editor and worked his way up to editor in chief.

Irene Starygina received a BA from Baruch college in 2007 with a major in journalism and creative writing, and was the health and lifestyle editor for Dollars & Sense, the school’s annual publication. During her junior and senior year, she held internships at Good Housekeeping magazine and the ABC News Brian Ross Investigative Unit.

Valerie Willis graduated in 2007 from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in Professional Writing in Journalism. At OU she developed an Adopt-a-Grandparent community service program, was a member of the Crimson Club student ambassadors and was selected as the Student of Excellence in Professional Writing. Valerie was an intern at Marie Claire magazine in the fall of 2007 and co-authored a Frommer’s travel guide titled MTV Road Trips USA published in June 2007.
